The Big Barge Art Centre is a gorgeous stop on West Island. The Barge was a former ferry that connected Home Island to West Island and now sits about 50 metres off the beach where it’s home to a gorgeous collection of colourful local art and jewellery made up from items washed up on the shores of the Cocos Islands.
Local Cocos Island artist Emma Washer – owns the Big Barge and restored it to it’s current awesome state. The art gallery is filled with colourful creations and artwork including photo canvases, paintings, textiles and jewellery made from the flotsam and jetsam washed ashore.
The beachfront location has beautiful views out over the Indian Ocean – a perfect spot to watch the sunset, while the kids enjoy the playground.
Check in with the Cocos Island Visitor Centre for opening hours, and any up and coming workshops where you can create your own coastal piece to take home. The Big Barge also hosts outdoor movie screenings at certain times through the year. The venue is also available for hire.
Surrounded by a lush coconut grove, The Big Barge Art Centre is one stop not to miss while on the islands.
