Greek Islands Naxos

HALKI (CHALKI) VILLAGE

Up with the sun to explore the island of Naxos, allowed us to stop at every beach, bay or village we desired and still be back in Hora in time for yet another stunning sunset.

Naxos is the perfect island to head off with no plan, and just follow a road.

A gorgeous stop on our day trip around the island was Halki (Chalki) village – only 16kms from Hora, and right in the centre of the island of Naxos. The region is called Tragea and it is the main olive cultivation region of the Cyclades.

The highlight of our visit to Halki was lunch at Giannis Tavern. You could smell the aroma of roasting meat well before you could see it. They have a roasting pit facing out on the street where everyone walking past could see and smell this incredible food cooking! Sitting under the taverns huge tree in the shade we dined on THE best pork meat plates we have ever had!

Halki was once the capital of Naxos and is filled with gorgeous old buildings and churches. Although small, the village has little alleys, full of colour that lead off from the main square.
