The Cocos Islands were a bit of an unexpected find as far as sea glass goes. Wandering the stunning white beaches there was sea glass scattered among the pebbles and coral washed ashore. Mainly browns, greens and whites, the most common colours found, but a great pastime while enjoying the beauty of the place!
Direction Island and Trannies Beach were fantastic spots for sea glass. Best on low tide – take a good hat and sunscreen!
Some of the beaches in the Cocos Islands are littered with huge amounts of plastic – floating down from Indonesia or thrown off boats among other things…. rubber thongs, toothbrushes, bottle tops, cigarette lighters…. some of it ends up at the Big Barge Art Centre to be transformed into something unique! Regular clean-ups are held to remove the rubbish.
Rubbish to most, treasures from the sea to others….. the perfect souvenir from the Cocos Islands.
