A highlight while visiting the Cocos Islands will most certainly be the motorised outrigger canoe tour with Cocos Islands Adventure Tours.
These tours depend on the tide and changes daily.
Climbing aboard our colourful canoes in the crystal clear waters of West Island, we didn’t really know what to expect, but once we were gliding across the stunning lagoon we really didn’t care – no matter where we headed – it was going to be beautiful!
Our first stop was Pulau Maria for some fantastic snorkelling. All the snorkelling equipment was provided as part of the tour and the incredible view under the surface was the perfect start, before we gently motored across to the spectacular Pulu Blan Madar Island. Stopping here for refreshments, crazy crab races and to enjoy the beauty of an absolutely perfect island – pure white beaches, crystal clear turquoise water and lush green vegetation.
The kids had their very own barge to swim out to where they enjoyed meeting all the other kids on the tour over a snack and a drink.
Next island was a chance to learn about some of the history of the islands and the role the Cocos played in various wars. A walk through the jungle to the highest point on the island, 13 metres, for fantastic views and then we beachcombed our way back to the canoes.
Our final stop was across the pristine waters to South Island where we got to relax and enjoy yet another quintessential tropical deserted island. Our boys got to husk a coconut, we swam, snorkelled and didn’t want to leave!
Arriving back at West Island as the sun set – the trip could not have been more perfect. It’s an absolute must when visiting the Cocos Islands.
Kayaks are also available for hire
